The fig had been in the same pot since 2021, and by the end of February 2025 it had started telling me so. Leaves dropping from the bottom up. Soil pulling away from the inside of the glazed pot. A crust on top you could have knocked on with a knuckle. I am 67, I retired in 2022 after 31 years working the front office at a school, and my lower back decides what I do now, so I put the job off about three weeks longer than I should have. That is how a repotting weekend gets planned in this house: too late, and then all at once.
What I did not want to do was guess. I have killed plants by guessing. So in March 2025 I went out and bought the Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix, the two pack of 6 quart bags, and I set aside one weekend to do six plants and be done with it. Bags, not a tub. I had never bought this particular mix before, and I have bought it again since.
I read the back of the bag on the card table before I opened it, because that is who I am. Sphagnum peat moss, coconut coir, and perlite, which the bag says helps with water retention and release. It feeds houseplants for up to 6 months. Each 6 quart bag fills four 6 inch containers, so the two pack was more than enough for my list of six. I like knowing that before I start rather than halfway through.
Gene stayed in the house with the pets shut in with him. Biscuit sheds enough that I did not want him walking through a garage floor covered in mix, and Pepper climbs, so a closed door is simpler than a rule I have to keep repeating. I spread an old shower curtain over the card table, put on the garden gloves, and worked through six plants across Saturday and Sunday. Both bags went. The big glazed pot took a great deal of it.
Then I waited, which is the part nobody enjoys. The plants settled in about three weeks. Not overnight, not in a day. About three weeks before they looked like they had decided to stay, and I stopped going out to the garage to look at them.
Six plants, one weekend, and about three weeks before anything looked settled. That is the honest timeline.
The Two Bags That Got Six Plants Through One Weekend
A 2 pack of 6 quart bags, and each bag fills four 6 inch containers. If your list looks like mine did, this is the size to buy.

This mix stays wet longer than I expected, and if you water on a schedule the way I do, Sunday morning, whether or not anything needs it, you will overwater. That was my mistake, not the bag's. Now I put a finger in up to the second knuckle first and skip anything that is still damp. One more line for the list: a bag that is open and half used needs a clip, not a fold.
Fungus gnats showed up in April 2025, about a month after the repotting. They came from wet soil and my watering habit. I am not going to blame a bag of potting mix for something I did, and I have never once blamed the Miracle-Gro mix for the gnats. I dealt with them with yellow sticky cards pushed into the pots and, more to the point, by letting the top of the soil dry out between waterings. That second part did more of the work than the cards.
The bag says it feeds for up to 6 months, and that matches what I saw. After six months I went back to my usual houseplant food on my usual Sunday schedule, and nothing looked like it had been waiting on me.
In March 2026 I bought a second two pack of the Miracle-Gro Indoor Potting Mix and repotted another round of plants. I am writing this in November 2026 with half of one bag still sitting on the garage shelf, rolled shut and held with a clip. It is dry, it is out of the way, and it will be there when the next plant outgrows its pot.
The one alternative I tried was in 2024, a chunky bark mix from a garden center with no brand on the bag, for a single pothos. It dried out too fast for a Sunday waterer and I was forever at it with the watering can. That pothos is fine and still with me. I just never bought a second bag of it, and I use the Miracle-Gro mix now for anything that goes into a pot.
What I'd Tell You If We Were Sitting at My Kitchen Table
If we were sitting at my kitchen table with the east window behind you, here is what I would say. This is potting mix, not a rescue. It will not fix a plant that is drowning in a dim corner, and it will not make you water less. What it does is give you a fair place to start, with peat moss, coir and perlite handling the water and six months of feed already in the bag. Buy the two pack if you have five or six pots to do at one go. Roll the leftover shut with a clip and keep it on a dry shelf, because it keeps. Take the plants out to the garage and shut the pets in the house for the afternoon, and if you want to know about a plant and your cat, ask your vet, not a potting mix label. And do not water on Sunday just because it is Sunday.
