The north corner of my dining room has been the worst spot in this house for eleven years. No window close to it. No afternoon sun ever reaches it. I put a plant there in 2015 and it lasted five weeks. I put another one there in 2019 and it went the same way, only slower, which was somehow worse because I kept hoping.
I am 67, retired, and I keep 24 houseplants in a one story ranch in Rochester, Minnesota. Twenty three of them do fine. That corner did not. So in October 2025 I stopped pretending a different potting mix would fix it and I bought an Aumtrly floor grow light. I want to be plain with you about what happened next, including the parts that annoy me, because I have read enough cheerful nonsense about lamps to last me.
Here is what the thing is, in the listing's own terms, because I am not going to dress it up. A floor stand adjustable from 17 to 61 inches. Mine sits at about 48. Three light modes and five dimming levels, and I have stayed on level three since the first week. A 16 hour setting on the timer, which is the only setting I have ever used. Twenty watts, 5000 Kelvin, one lamp, one corner, plugged in with its own adapter.
I bought a parlor palm the same week. Not because I had a plan, but because the corner was empty and I am not good at leaving a corner empty. I set the lamp behind it, aimed the head down at the pot, and then did the thing I always do, which is nothing, for two months.
Eight weeks in, in December, a new frond came up out of the middle of that palm. I want to be careful here, because one new frond in eight weeks is ordinary and I am not going to tell you this lamp grows plants five times faster than anything else. It is a lamp standing where the sun does not. That corner had not produced new growth in eleven years. Now it has, and it has kept producing since, slowly, the way a palm does.

The corner that killed two plants now has a palm in it
One lamp, one pot, one timer setting I have not touched since October 2025. This is the one standing in my dining room.

It does not stop fungus gnats, which I had in 2025 for my own reasons, and it does not make a plant that wants a bright south window happy in a dark room. My fig stays in the living room by the big window and I would not move it back here. The Aumtrly lamp is for the plant you already know you cannot grow in that spot and want to try anyway.
The other thing it does not do is reach very far. It is one lamp aimed at one pot. When I set the head wrong it shines in my eyes at dinner and I have to turn it away. Gene has opinions about this. The cord runs down the stand and along the baseboard to the outlet, and it is taped there now, because otherwise Biscuit's tail catches it when he walks past.
Two things changed in that room after the lamp went in. The first was the palm. The second was that I stopped hauling the watering can past the dining table, because the parlor palm is one of the three plants I put on Blumat stakes in January 2026. Clay cones in the soil, a hose into a one gallon jug beside each pot, no power, no batteries. Water is drawn out of the jug as the soil dries. The jugs sit on the floor and I do not love that, and Pepper knocked one over once, so the fern's jug lives behind the stand now where she cannot reach it. Follow the directions in the box, they are better than anything I could tell you.
The trip that made me do something about all this was October 2024, when I stuck two terracotta spikes in wine bottles and came home to a dead Boston fern. Twelve days in Tucson in February 2026 and nine days in Maine in September 2026 both went fine, and I will admit the difference was mostly the stakes plus neighbor Deb looking in once. The lamp is not a plant sitter. It is a light.
One more honest note about the corner itself. I still have to look at the lamp. It stands on a round base on the hardwood, the stand is matte metal, and at first it read as a piece of equipment in a room where I did not want equipment. Thirteen months in, I do not see it any more. What I see is the palm.
What I'd Tell You If We Were Sitting at My Kitchen Table
I would tell you to buy it for one corner and one plant, not for a whole collection. I would tell you to set the timer and then leave it alone for two months, because standing over a plant every morning looking for signs of growth will make you crazy and it will make you water more than you should. I would tell you that twenty watts on a stand is not daylight, and if your plant wants real sun, this will not be that. And I would tell you that if your cat climbs the way mine does, anything that ends up on the floor near a plant gets arranged by you, not by the cat. I keep anything I do not want Pepper into up high or behind a closed door, and I would check any plant question with your vet rather than with me.
I would also tell you that I wish I had bought the Aumtrly lamp after the first plant died instead of after the second. I would tell you it has run for thirteen months on one setting and I have not had to think about it since. I would tell you the gooseneck is the part I adjust most, because a head aimed straight down lights the pot and a head aimed a little off lights the leaves. That is the whole story. The corner has a plant in it.
One corner, one lamp, thirteen months and counting
If you have a spot in your house that has never held a plant, this is what I put in mine. The palm is still there.
